In Lomellina nel Quattrocento: il declino delle stirpi e i «feudi accomprati»

Abstract

The study analyses the feudal concessions of the Viscontis and the Sforzas in the Lomellina area in the territory of Pavia. As a result of the force of local communities, of the constant presence of the town and of the intervention of the dukes, most feudal lords are ‘new’; the traditional aristocratic class has weakened, and feudal relations are ‘contaminated’ by patrimonial elements. What emerges is a early decadence of the seigniorial authority; the existence of the feudal lords was incompatible with the ongoing evolution of local society and rural economy. A table records the sequence of feudal investitures in each place.
